How to mix disco

There is a nice article about mixing over the Cosmic Boogie Collective. Read it! Here is a teaser to make you move: - Its impossible to explain how to mix a genre of music really. I mean, its all in the ear of the beholder isn’t it? And does music need mixing together? David Mancuso doesn’t think so, neither do I when I listen to an album. I’m writing this because I want to share my experience of waking up on the record decks, learning how to mix in different ways, and how you can crossover genres and BPM’s without it sounding awful. I’m no master at this craft yet, I’m still a novice really…but that doesn’t really matter. I learned a lot over the last few years, some the hard way naturally, but some by listening to other people (how they mix (and what they say). So if you have just woken up to the fact that you want to mix up a bit of everything together, and not just be 130bpm hard house all the way, then keep reading. - As we said already, read the whole!!

Our good old friend Apollo Zero gave us this amazing welcome back gift, this is his brand new mashup and this is the world premier here @ APC. Here is what he has to say about his mix: - I have a bad love for Giorgo Moroder.. the godfather of synths, so this was the perfect pairing. It's Chromeo's "Call Me Up" vocals with Giorgio's "Night Drive (Theme from American Gigiolo)" aka Blondie's "Call Me." I also gave the track a new spin blending "Who Made You" by The Twin (Boy George). Rounding out the mix, there's some phone sound effects thrown in from Germany's Kraftwerk and Camouflage.

Roisin Murphy: Movie Star official video + live videos

Roisin Murphy's new single is called Movie Star. So it was quite logical to shoot a movie influenced video, we guess. Finally it turned out to be a homage to a lot of B-movies, most notably the works of John Waters.  Especially the Divine lookalike and the giant shrimp are allusions to Water's Multiple Maniacs where Divine is raped by a lobster [scene]. But to show you how colourful Roisin is, we have two more videos, both live performances ofthis very same song. Its so nice how different can one song be, even performed by the same artist.

Grace Jones Planning a Comeback

This weekend was full of surprises. None other than Grace Jones appeared last week in London at Massive Attack's  2008 Meltdown Festival to perform her classic "Pull Up To The Bumper.

Look how she moves around the stage. Amazing. This woman hasn't aged a year since she stepped out of the limelight about twenty years ago.
And there's good news for Grace Jones fans. The singer is working on a comeback record which will is scheduled to hit in September.

The album will be released on England's premier dance electro label Wall of Sound so that is possibly a good indication of what Jones in 2008 will sound like. Slave to the rhythm, baby. [via arjanwrites]
