Sex Pistol says it's all about family

Mrrotten

He and his band have been the scourge of the establishment for decades, whether by swearing on television in an age when it still shocked or mocking the monarchy. So it may come as a surprise to hear Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, or Johnny Rotten as he is more commonly known, describe the punk music movement he helped pioneer as championing "family values." "Family values, unity, spirit, community. All these things they try and steal away from us. That's punk," Lydon told Reuters in an interview in an interview this week.

Ian Curtis memorial stone stolen

Ian_curtis

The gravestone of former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis has been stolen from a Cheshire cemetery. Curtis was 23 when he hanged himself in the kitchen of his Macclesfield home in May 1980, shortly before the band were due to go on tour in the US. Cheshire Police said his memorial stone was taken from where he is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery. Officers are appealing for anyone with information on its whereabouts to contact them. Detectives said the stone, which has the inscription "Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80" and the words "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was taken sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. A police spokesman said: "There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft. "This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present."[via BBC News]

Come & Get Your Tittsworth - The Not So Annonymous "12 Steps" out August 12th 2008.

12stepsalbumartwork

For anyone tuned into the sounds of today’s club culture, you’ll be aware that one of the most exciting and well championed of dance musical frequenices and beats is the  ‘Baltimore’ or ‘B-more’ sound. Spotlighting a genre whose artists dabble and dwell in the "b-more" scene on an international level. From Diplo, Annie Mac, M.I.A, Aaron La Crate, Scottie B and Sinden  - One artist who truly stands out is Tittsworth (yes, that's his real last name). Up until recently this sonic movement was mostly confined to the city which gives it its name, however things are already changing with the clever combination of hip-hop attitude and house music, the energy and enthusiasm is spreading like wildfire on an international scale.

How to mix disco

Dj_mixing

There is a nice article about mixing over the Cosmic Boogie Collective. Read it! Here is a teaser to make you move: - Its impossible to explain how to mix a genre of music really. I mean, its all in the ear of the beholder isn’t it? And does music need mixing together? David Mancuso doesn’t think so, neither do I when I listen to an album. I’m writing this because I want to share my experience of waking up on the record decks, learning how to mix in different ways, and how you can crossover genres and BPM’s without it sounding awful. I’m no master at this craft yet, I’m still a novice really…but that doesn’t really matter. I learned a lot over the last few years, some the hard way naturally, but some by listening to other people (how they mix (and what they say). So if you have just woken up to the fact that you want to mix up a bit of everything together, and not just be 130bpm hard house all the way, then keep reading. - As we said already, read the whole!!

The Silent Years Prep For The Globe's Release (Aug. 26) With Free Download Of Debut LP

Tsyglobe

Straight out of Detroit rock city, The Silent Years are proud to announce the upcoming release of their forthcoming album The Globe, set for release on August 26th. The band has been in the studio throughout the harsh Detroit winter of 2007, making the final touches on The Globe with none other than Chris Coady (!!!, TV On The Radio, Grizzly Bear, Architecture in Helsinki, Blonde Redhead) on their forthcoming album due out August 26th 2008. Critically acclaimed by the press and having been compared to and equally inspired by, artists such as Elliot Smith, Tim Buckley, Flaming Lips and Sunny Day Real Estate; they combine simple and sweet melodies with sharp and powerful bursts of emotion via instrument and vox; leaving even the most stoic of listeners with goose bumps and a smile.
Allow yourself to be taken into the weird and wondrous world created by The Silent Years, a very special band indeed.

Grace Jones Planning a Comeback

Gracejones This weekend was full of surprises. None other than Grace Jones appeared last week in London at Massive Attack's  2008 Meltdown Festival to perform her classic "Pull Up To The Bumper.

Look how she moves around the stage. Amazing. This woman hasn't aged a year since she stepped out of the limelight about twenty years ago.
And there's good news for Grace Jones fans. The singer is working on a comeback record which will is scheduled to hit in September.

The album will be released on England's premier dance electro label Wall of Sound so that is possibly a good indication of what Jones in 2008 will sound like. Slave to the rhythm, baby. [via arjanwrites]

Booka Shade interview by XLR8R

Booka_shade

When artists rail on about subtlety and stepping away from the almighty riff, a red flag tends to go up. In the case of Berlin’s Booka Shade, though, careful refinement has always been part of their 20-year-plus process. With their roots in synth-pop bands, producer Walter Merziger and drummer Arno Kammermeier have always erred on the side of stripped-back groove, long before minimal techno made it fashionable. Booka Shade’s latest album, The Sun and the Neon Light, has the familiar weight of their breakout release, Movements, but with a more spacious, experimental edge. Tracks like “Psychameleon” trade house’s pulse for a glittery swing, built from a malfunctioning Korg Poly-800 synth and a vocoded whisper. It’s a sound that can be delicate, but never thin–a change at least partially due to the duo’s renewed interest in vintage hardware and acoustic instruments. Here they talk about the benefits of dragging 600 lbs. of gear clear across the ocean.
